How to spot conspiracy theories ?

When confronted with any piece of information, everyone should question it. If a story explains everything without nuance, it can be an indicator of a possible conspiracy theory.

In addition, another factor would be whether an article or documentary relies on sensationalism or gruesome images. Another bad sign is when the article looks more like fiction than information.

A good question to ask when recognizing a conspiracy theory is: Does the article or documentary gives any sources ? Or even any context ?

Another helpful tip would be to pay attention to the style and tone of the information: if the article of documentary acknowledges the limits of its knowledge by remaining factual and objective while presenting different points of view, it is unlikely to be a conspiracy theory.

On the other hand, it is more suspicious if the information is disseminated as absolute truth, with a subjective tone playing on an emotional register. An author who demonizes those allegedly behind the conspiracy, while remaining vague about the sources, can also be an indicator.

Moreover, it may be worthwhile to study any photos by checking the date and source, to ensure that the content is not altered or misappropriated.
